Water For People, Country Coordinator-Rwanda
After months of research, scoping, and preparation, Water For People–Rwanda broke ground in July on work that will serve 5,400 people in the suburbs of the capital city of Kigali. Working with its partners, Electrogaz (the national utility company) and the local government, the program will support safe drinking water.
In addition, the new country program will support 5,200 students and school staff with ecological toilets in partnership with Rwanda Environment Care and rainwater catchment systems in partnership with ANA Rwanda.
Working within the public utility model that Water For People has found to be effective in developing nations, the cooperative Icyerekezo cy’Ubuzima will begin managing and maintaining the water points upon implementation.
This established engagement of NGO and governmental partners is crucial to the success of the Water For People–Rwanda program said Regional Manager Sarah Bramley, “Managing a water system is often the hardest part of improving access to safe drinking water. For that reason, Water For People is giving special attention to helping our partners develop a management system that will last right from the beginning of the project."
